Spatial correlations and higher-order gradient terms in a continuum description of dislocation dynamics

چکیده
The problem of the collective behavior of straight parallel edge dislocations is investigated. Starting from the equation of motion of individual dislocations a continuum description is derived. It is shown that the influence of the short range dislocation-dislocation interactions on the dislocation dynamics can be well described by a local back stress which scales like the square root of dislocation density plus a non-local diffusion-like term. The value of the corresponding diffusion coefficient is determined numerically, and implications for size effects in plasticity are discussed. 2003 Acta Materialia Inc. متن کاملA Semi-analytical Solution for Flexural Vibration of Micro Beams Based on the Strain Gradient Theory
In this paper, the flexural free vibrations of three dimensional micro beams are investigated based on strain gradient theory. The most general form of the strain gradient theory which contains five higher-order material constants has been applied to the micro beam to take the small-scale effects into account. Having considered the Euler-Bernoulli beam model, governing equations of motion are w...
متن کاملOn the Range of 3d Dislocation Pair Correlations
Numerical studies of dislocation pair correlations have played a central role in deriving a continuum theory from the equations of motion of 2D dislocation systems in a mathematically rigorous way. As part of an effort to extend this theory into the full 3D dislocation problem, 3D dislocation pair correlations were studied with discrete dislocation dynamics simulation. As a first approximation,...
متن کاملField Dislocation Mechanics with Applications in Atomic, Mesoscopic and Tectonic Scale Problems
This thesis consists of two parts. The first part explores a 2-d edge dislocation model to demonstrate characteristics of Field Dislocation Mechanics (FDM) in modeling single and collective behavior of individual dislocations. The second work explores the possibility of modelling adiabatic shear bands propagation within the timespace averaged framework of Mesoscopic Field Dislocation Mechanics ...
متن کاملDerivation of Higher Order Gradient Continuum Models from Atomistic Models for Crystalline Solids
We propose a new upscaling scheme for the passage from atomistic to continuum mechanical models for crystalline solids. It is based on a Taylor expansion of the deformation function and allows us to capture the microscopic properties and the discreteness effects of the underlying atomistic system up to an arbitrary order. The resulting continuum mechanical model involves higher order terms and ...
